The Veteran's Retention Bonus (VRB) is a program founded by Rowland Associates that provides a vehicle for matching qualified corporations with military personnel transitioning out of the military within 180 days. What makes the VRB stand apart from other programs that seek to hire our veterans is the addition of Restricted Stock Units, a financial wealth building opportunity. The military provides programs such as Hiring Our Heroes, the Transition Assistance Program and the Career Skills Program during this 180-day period. Some 200,000 service men and women transition out of the military annually, many through these programs. The military provides participating corporations with guidelines for salary, interviews and job offers. This has created a situation where most of the corporations' packages are very similar in nature. RSUs are the most common type of equity compensation; the units vest over time but there is no initial purchase requirement. Once the RSUs vest, the shares are no longer restricted and the employee has the option of holding or selling the stock to do with as they wish, i.e., put a down payment on a home, build a portfolio, make large purchase, etc. RSU’s are not a new idea; we are just changing the time and place where we believe they will be most effective. They are typically offered to sales and management professionals, but we believe offering them to military personnel can be a life changing opportunity.
